Why is research important? Personal experience...

Research is extremely important!  When a family gets word from a doctor that a child is sick or a loved one has been diagnosed with a disease or terminal illness, what is the first thing they do?  They begin to ask questions and google what research is available.  Research can ease a parent’s mind an give hope for the family.  It also allows parents to make an informed decision about what treatments to take etc.
One of my close friends got word that her son was born with an extreme cleft palate.  The hospital started making arrangements for surgery and she decided to look at all her options.  After seeing the research on a new surgical procedure that was happening in Chicago, she made arrangements and flew to the hospital several times over the next 6 years.  She is so glad she found this research and now her son is 10 and is doing wonderful.  He is my son’s best friend and I am thankful for the research that helped inform her decision.

  1. I also was able to share a story about how research is important to a friend of mine. As with most information, we need to ensure we do our best to provide equitable accessibility. Your friend was very lucky to be able to discover what she did, and also have access to it. There are many people around the world who are unable to take advantage of what might be available to them. Additionally, we need to support the efforts of ethical and effective research endeavors and the methods used to promote them reliably.

Thank you for sharing your story!

  2. Tisha,
Thanks for submitting an uplifting story. As you mentioned research has many benefits for all of us; research provides many people with the answers they are seeking. As we have learned throughout this course research is an answer to a question, and research provides us with knowledge. Sometimes research is frustrating however when we see positive outcomes as a result of our research we give a sigh of relieve because we know it was all worth it. I’m sure your friend is forever grateful for the research she found to help her son. A great mother will do anything to help her children and at any cost.

  3. I too have been interested in facial clefts as it is a big factor in why some children do not get adopted and end up in orphanages for far too long. In many cases, the surgery is not extreme, and it helps the child tremendously. I enjoyed this week's blog post!!

  4. Wow, this is a great story. Research is really important that it helps improve life of mankind, quality of life and lets us explore more of the unknown. Thru the research, data is collected and analyzed and findings are concluded. There are different types of research: quantitative research, qualitative research, primary research, secondary research, production research, self-generated research... Each one involves different methodologies and approaches. Research papers from the others can enlighten us with different ideas and help us view same issues from different angles and perspectives. That is why research quality is important and all researches have to be peer-reviewed to ensure the findings are valid and agreed by the peers before it can be published.
